Minister of Human Settlements Thembi Simelane has launched a R576 million greenfield social housing project in Somerset West that is expected to provide 1 036 units for residents.
The development includes 208 units that are now ready for occupation, with the full project expected to be completed by March 2027. The site will consist of 19 blocks of four storey walk up apartment buildings.
Minister Simelane said on Tuesday that the demand for affordable housing remains overwhelming, noting that 15 000 applications were received and processed for the project. She stated that the number of applicants in this area alone demonstrates the level of need facing the Western Cape.
The project will feature a commercial section containing shopping facilities and a crèche. Residential areas are planned to include green spaces, recreational areas, play parks and braai facilities.
Kevin Phillips, a council member for the Social Housing Regulatory Authority, said the development would create an average of 360 job opportunities during construction. He described the project as a catalytic development for skills development and economic opportunity.
The development has access to the N2 highway. This follows reports that approximately 440 000 applicants are currently registered on the City of Cape Town Housing Needs Register.
