Architects have released early concept designs for the planned R8-billion expansion of the Cape Winelands Airport project.

Boogertman + Partners Architects shared a video featuring drawings of the envisioned airport layout, including a bird's-eye view of the terminal building. The developers stated that the design draws inspiration from regional patterns, textures, and the natural beauty of the landscape.

RSA Aero acquired the property in 2020 with plans to develop it into an international commercial airport. Growthpoint Properties joined as a strategic partner in 2025 to co-develop and manage a 450-hectare mixed-use aviation precinct ancillary to the terminal and runway.

The project has reached several milestones, including final environmental approvals which took almost five years. The City of Cape Town has approved the rezoning of the property, which spans approximately 350,000m², and Infrastructure South Africa has awarded the airport Strategic Integrated Project 17 status.

Construction on the aviation precinct is expected to begin later in 2026, with the first phase potentially commissioned as early as 2028, subject to approval. The development is anticipated to support more than 35,000 direct and 100,000 indirect jobs during its first 20 years of operation.

The developers entered into a cooperation agreement with Stellenbosch University to advance innovation in smart and green development. According to the developers, the airport expansion is anticipated to transform the area into a significant economic hub over the coming years.
