A Grade 10 pupil at Bellville South High School died on Thursday evening after sustaining a fatal head injury during an alleged assault by a fellow student. Police have opened a murder investigation, and the Western Cape Education Department is providing support to the school community.
A Grade 10 pupil at Bellville South High School died following an alleged assault inside a classroom. According to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), the pupil sustained a fatal head injury during what it described as a “serious and distressing incident” involving two Grade 10 pupils.
Bronagh Hammond, WCED spokesperson, extended condolences to those affected by the tragedy. She stated, “Our condolences to the family, friends and school community for this tragic and alarming loss.” The department indicated that the incident is reportedly linked to an alleged attempted theft of a cellphone in the classroom.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that Bellville South police registered a murder case. According to Van Wyk, “Bellville South police registered a murder case for investigation following an incident at a secondary school in Bellville South involving two learners.” No arrests had been made at the time of publication.
The Bellville South Community Policing Forum (CPF) expressed sadness over the learner’s death and called on members of the public not to speculate while the investigation is under way. The CPF strongly condemned violence in schools and conveyed its condolences to the family, friends and school,” they said.
