The event will run from Wale Street to Strand Street, including part of Shortmarket Street. Organisers expect more than 1,500 people to be seated at one table, with thousands more expected to join the open street throughout the day.
Over 500 members of Cape Town's homeless community have been invited to join the table for a complimentary wholesome meal. Guests are encouraged to bring their own food or purchase meals from participating Bree Street restaurants.
The event marks the return of Open Streets on Bree Street, featuring walking, cycling, and community activity along the route. Public transport into the CBD, including Prasa services, will run on the day.
Peter Heeger, Community Chest CEO, said the Langtafel celebrates the spirit of Nelson Mandela by creating a sense of dignity and belonging. Brad Armitage, founder of Mission for Inner City Cape Town, stated that the event serves as a reminder that one table can bring together people from every walk of life.
Roland Postma, managing director of Young Urbanists NPC, said the initiative uses public spaces and food to work towards realising ideas in the Constitution and the National Development Plan 2030. Businesses are invited to support the day by adopting street blocks or donating through Community Chest.
